Photography (following the Photoshoot for Freedom)

Perhaps the greatest challenge to photography in the UK today is muddle, rather than malice. The law is much as it always has been: few restrictions on the right to photograph per se – although some restrictions on the manner in which photographs are taken. In other words, don’t use your camera to harass or intimidate: don’t obstruct the police and legitimate public services.

Are we all doomed?

I'll be speaking at this event below on 3rd May -

----

Dystopia – Are we Doomed?

Apocalyptic scenarios dominate science fiction cinema today. Is our fearful attitude to the future different to the cold-war terrors of the fifties?

What fuels our sense of doom, and is it justified by reality?

Speakers

Josie Appleton – writer and convenor of the Manifesto Club

Jon Goodbun - University of Westminster

Steve Fuller – philosopher and sociologist

Chair – Timandra Harkness

Convention on Modern Liberty

The Manifesto Club had a stall at the Convention on Modern Liberty in London on 28 February, where over a thousand people gathered to discuss how best to challenge encroachments on civil liberties. We gathered support for our campaigns against vetting, booze bans and curbs on visiting non-EU artists and academics, as well as selling copies of our EU Phrasebook. The convention revealed a real appetite for campaigning on freedom issues, which bodes well for our Freedom Summer.

*Event* Is there more to freedom than "civil liberties"?

IS THERE MORE TO FREEDOM THAN “CIVIL LIBERTIES”?
Sunday March 8th at 3.30pm

Speaker: Josie Appleton, convenor of the Manifesto Club

Thousands are gathering across the UK to attend the Convention on Modern Liberty, an important event discussing the state of freedom and civil liberties today. Concerns range from the expansion of the ‘database-state’ and increased power to share personal information, to the imminent introduction of ID cards and the pragmatic misuse of anti-terror legislation.

IMPORTANT EVENT FOR ALL PHOTOGRAPHERS!

IMPORTANT EVENT FOR ALL PHOTOGRAPHERS!

Monday 16th February 2009 is the enforcement date for Section 76 of
the Counter-Terrorism Act 2008. As the British Journal of Photography
(BJP) wrote last month:

"The relationship between photographers and police could worsen next
month when new laws are introduced that allow for the arrest - and
imprisonment - of anyone who takes pictures of officers 'likely to be
useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism'."
