Two photographers have produced school photos with a difference - the children are lined up as normal, only facing away from the camera. The idea for the piece came when they tried to take photographs in a school - but were told they could only take one child, and only the back of their head.
"The ethical issues and paranoia surrounding the laws of photographing children in today’s society are confusing and – some would say – farcical,” said one of the photographers. The other added: "We hope people will be amused by the pictures, but we also wanted to challenge people and ask at what point will the photography of children be completely forbidden?"
Everyday photographs of children in schools have become a minefield; some schools have 15 page long policies, and others have just banned it altogether. All this means big gaps in the family photo albums, and children missing out on having a record of their experiences. The tragedy is that the taboo on photography in schools will do nothing to stop paeodphiles getting hold of photos of children - and everything to spoil family and school life.
